The government has announced US$100 in cash assistance for each person affected by the Kariba ferry disaster to help families meet funeral and other immediate costs. The announcement was made late on Saturday by Kariba district development coordinator Rodwell Mtetwa, who chairs the Civil Protection Unit for the district, while addressing mourners at Kariba District Hospital during the identification of recovered bodies.A payment of $100 is an insult to both the victims and their families. This amount must be revised, as many of the victims were breadwinners and should beadequately compensated for the trauma caused by the government’s negligence. By compensating a meager $100 for a human life, what message are we sending about the value of Black Zimbabwean lives? The government should place greater value on people’s lives.
