Tinashe Sambiri– In a development that could reshape Zimbabwe’s political landscape and Zanu PF’s much-discussed 2030 campaign, authorities have confirmed that a draft law has been prepared to extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s stay in power beyond the current constitutional limits.Attorney General Virginia Mabiza told the Daily News on Wednesday that the draft Bill, aimed at facilitating this extension, is awaiting tabling before Cabinet and Parliament ahead of its anticipated implementation this year.“There is no current legal hurdle that can stop the implementation of the 2030 resolution. In any event, we have already finished drafting the Bill. The Bill is now with the Minister of Justice (Ziyambi Ziyambi), and he is going to take it through all the relevant processes which include Cabinet and Parliament,” Mabiza said. The announcement has already drawn sharp criticism from opposition figures, who argue that extending Mnangagwa’s term would violate constitutional principles.“This is a blatant attempt to undermine the constitution and cling to power beyond legitimate limits,” one opposition spokesperson said, calling for robust public debate and legal scrutiny before any such Bill is implemented. As Zimbabwe prepares for the next phase of its political calendar, this move is set to intensify debates over governance, democratic norms, and the future of the 2030 campaign strategy.
